In Moab

Naomi

My sons, my husband, Why? Why? Oh Why has the Lord God allowed this to happen to me Why? Why? Have I sinned before Him? I came to Moab because of the famine and I never stopped serving him but why has he allowed this to happen. He blessed me with the two of you as wonderful wives for my sons but now he has taken my husband away and now my sons are also dead. I am too old to marry again and you , my daughters will be widows

Ruth

Mother its alright Mother

Naomi

No longer shall my name be Naomi which means pleaseant for the Lord has made my life bitter.

Orpah

Mother what are we going to do

Naomi

I must return to Israel. There is nothing for me here in Moab. The Lord is blessing Israel and there is food. I will be able to return. Go and get ready. We must leave immediately.

(Music starts to play the lights dim and the walk around the stage)

Scene 2

On the Road

Ruth

Naomi, we have been walking two days now how much farther is it?

Naomi

My daughters, return back home. Bethlehem is not too far I can make it on my own from here. There is nothing for you in Judea.Go back to Moab.Your family is there

Ruth

No, because we married you sons you are our Mother

Orpah

We cannot leave you, allow us to stay with you

Naomi

Orpah Ė I beg of you go back. My land is foreign to you and yours is foreign to me. You will not understand our people and our ways. You will miss your family.

Rather go back

(Orpah departs with a large long hug, touching hands as she slowly leaves ruth and Naomi on the stage)

Song : Where you go I will go

Naomi

Ruth

Go no further

I am bitter

Leave me on my own

Ruth

I have no husband

I have no sons

Leave me alone

Go leave me in my pain

You know that Im too old to marry again

Ruth

Where you go, I will go

Where you stay I will stay

Your people will be my people

Your God my God

Where you die, I will die

But donít turn me away

For in my heart I also bear the scars

And I cannot leave you mother for leaving is too hard

Naomi

Ruth your home is Moab you donít know of our land

Ruth donít come with me youíll workd hard with your hands

Go leave me in my pain

You know that I am too old to marry again

(Chorus repeated by Ruth)

Naomi

Our land there in Judea is not like your land. We do not serve many gods like your people serve. Here is Judea we know that there is only one God. The God who made the heavens and the earth.A thousand years ago he revealed himself to our forefather Abraham.Abraham made a covenant with God and we the descendants of Abraham follow in this covenant.

Ruth

Mother Ė tell me about your God. I want to know more about him

Naomi

Well God is not made of wood and stone. He sits enthroned in heaven and he sees us every moment of the dayand although he has afflicted me with all these trials he still is goodÖ..(Their voices fade with the lightsÖ)

Scene 3

At Bethlehem

Jack

Can this be Naomi? She used to be so beautiful so full of joy

Joe

Itís been ten years a lot of things can happen

Pete

Where is her husband and her sons

Naomi

My husband is dead! My sons are dead! Donít call me Naomi. My name shall be Mara

Joe

But Mara means Bitter

Naomi

But the Lord has made my life bitter.I went away full but the Lord has brought me back empty. The Lord has afflicted me.The almighty has brought misfortune upon me

(Naomi and Ruth walk downstage right and settle down and the villagers slowly leave the scene)

Ruth

Mom there is one thing I do not understand. You have been telling me about the God you serve. But there is one thing. How do you meet Him if you cannot see him

Naomi

He is not far from any one of us. Just because you do not see him it does not mean that he cannot see you.

Ruth

If I cannot see Him how then can I meet Him

Naomi

Why donít you go outside and find a quiet spot and pray to Him. He will hear you and I believe that He will reveal Himself to you (Ruth gets up and moves centre stage where she kneels for a few seconds and then starts to sing

SONG : God of Israel

Ruth

Mom Ė something happened out there. I think I met with your GodÖ.

Naomi

I knew you would my child

Ruth

Mom, there is one more concern that I have. We have nothing. There is no food in the store and no man to work the land. What are we going to eat?

Naomi

Ruth, the Almighty is good. A thousand years ago he wrote in the law through his prophet Moses that the people of Israel must care for the poor. One of the commands that God has made is that the owners of fields may not go over their fields a second time to look for anything that was left behind.

Ruth

That is a strange idea. In Moab the owners of the fields take everything even to the last stalk and tiniest grain

Naomi

Yes but God has said that the wealthy must not go over the fields a second time. Everything they left behind after the first harvest must be left for the poor to collect. There is therefore food in Israel for you and me.

Ruth

Well then let me go to the fields and pick the left over grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favour. If the Lord has provided for us by giving us this law then lets us use that which he has provided.

Naomi

Go ahead my daughter-(Ruth goes to the fields and starts picking up the corn)

Scene 4

In the wheat fields

Joe

Hey Pete, Jack come and see this

Pete

Who is she

Jack

Is she not the Moabitess that came with Naomi

Joe

She is working awfully hard, much harder then me

Pete

And me too

Song 2: What manner of woman is this

Joe

Oh What manner of woman is this that works harder then me

Pete

She came in the morning while I was still yawning and Jack was having his tes

Joe

She picked up wheat in tin the midday heat while I slept under a tree

Jack

Oh what manner of woman is this

(All)

That works harder then me

(jack)

Oh what manner of woman is this that works harder the you (To Pete)

Joe

For you have to admit that you chose to sit when someone else stole your shoe

Pete

And shes not like Jack who complains of his back and the work he has to do

Joe

On her face is a smile and a laugh that is true

They all do a circular walk

Oh what manner of woman is this that works harder then me

Now there are many other woman that I also know

But they work about the same aount as us

Which is not so much Iím afraid

And no one works after they are paid

Oh what manner of woman is this that works harder then me

We are all lazy she must be crazy to work hard in this heat

Pass me a biscuit, I can risk it, jack lets have some tea

Oh what manner of woman is this that works harders then me

(Boaz enters)

Boaz

The Lord be with you

All

The Lord bless you

Boaz

Whose young woman is that?

Pete

She is the Moabitess who came back from Moab with Naomi. She asked to gather wheat behind the harvesters and has worked steadily from morning until now, except for a short rest in the shelter.

Boaz

My daughter donít go and glean in another field and donít go away from here. Stay with my servant girls. And whenever you are thirsty go and get a drink from the water jars that the men have filled

Ruth

Why have I found such favour in your eyes that you notice me a foreigner.

Boaz

I have been told all about what you have done for your mother in law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and your homelands and came to live with people you do not know.May the Lord repay you for what you have done.May you be richly rewarded by the Lord God of Israel under whose wings you have found refuge.

Ruth

You have given me comfort and have spoken kindly to your servant though I do not have the standing of one of your servant girls.

Boaz

Its time to eat. Come over here (they walk towards the harvesters) Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar (Ruth sits down to eat)

(To the harvesters) Even if she gathers among the sheaves, do not embarrass her. Rather pull out some stalks for her to pick up and donít rebuke her

(Everyone freezes and the leaves the stage, Ruth crosses the stage back to her mother)

Scene 5

Naomiís house

Ruth

Look how much I have been blessed

Naomi

Where did you glean today? Where did you work.Blessed is the man who took notice of you

Ruth

The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz.He spoke kindly to me and provided me with food

Naomi

The Lord bless him.He has not stopped showing kindness to the living and the dead. That man is our close relative, he is one of our kinsman redeemers.

Ruth

He even said to me ďStay here with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grainĒ

Naomi

It will be good for you to go with her girls, because in someone elses field you might be harmed

(Time passes)

Naomi

My daughter should I not try to find a home for you where you will be provided for.For a few months now you have been working at the harvest field of Boaz. And is not Boaz a kinsman of ours.Tonight he will be winnowing Barley on the threshing floor.Wash and perfume yourself and put on your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor but donít let him know you are there until he is finished eating and drinking. When he lies down note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down.He will tell you what to to do

Ruth

I will do whatever you say

Scene 6`

The threshing floor

(Noise of laughter and merriment, Boaz and his men enter and settle down to sleep)

Boaz

The Lord has blessed us.Praise be to the Lord God almight.

(He starts to fall asleep and the others around him do the same)

(Ruth enters and then lies down at his feet)

Song 4: You are a woman of noble character

Who are you who lies at my feet

Ruth: I am your servant Ruth

Boaz

Why do you come to me

Ruth

You are the kinsman redeemer I choose

Boaz

You havenít run after other men

You are favoured in his sight

What you have done is right

Boaz

You are a woman of noble character

You are a woman of strength

Ruth

Why does my master notice me

Why does he commend

Boaz

You are a woman of noble character

You open your arms to the poor

Ruth

But many girls do upright things

Boaz

But you surpass them all

You are a woman of noble character

You are blessed by the Lord

Ruth

Am I a woman of noble character

Am I a woman of strength

Why does my master notice me

Why do you commend

Boaz

Yes youre a woman of noble of character

You open your arms to the poor

Spoken Ruth

The kindness that you have showed to me is far greater then the kindness that you showed earlier

Boaz

And now my daughter donít be afraid.I will do for you whatever you ask.All my fellow townsmen know that you are a woman of noble character.Although it is true that I am near of kin there is a kinsman redeemer nearer then I.Stay here for the night and in the morning if he wants to redeem good let him redeem. But if he is not willing as surely as the Lord lives I will do it.Lie here until the morning

(Lights dim)

Scene 7

Naomiís House

Naomi

How did it go my daughter

Ruth

It happened as you said it would.I went to the threshing floor and lay down at his feet as you asked me to do. He said that he would redeem me today if he is able and he gave me barley so that I would not return to you empty handed

Naomi

Wait my daughter until you find out what happens. For this man will not rest until the matter is settled today

(They freeze, the other side of the stage becomes alive, people moving around. Boaz stands up and calls a man Hezron, who is the kinsman redeemer)

Scene 8

The City Gate

Boaz

Come over here my friend and sit down.Friends and elders come and join us. (Sits down with the crowd) Naomi is selling the piece of land that belonged to her husband. As you are her closest kinsman redeemer, you have the first right to redeem the land.

Hezron

Then I will redeem it

Boaz

But if you redeem it the land, you also require as your wife the dead manís widow in order to maintain the name of the dead with the property.

Hezron

Then I canít redeem it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself.I cannot do it.To legalize this transaction I take off my sandal

Boaz

To day you are all witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of he husband and sons.I have also acquired Ruth the Moabitess, Mahlons widow as my wife. Today you are my witnesses.

Elder 1

We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah who together built up the house of Jacob.May you have standing in Ephrathah and have fame in Bethlehem. (Ruth joins Boaz and they walk forward as the blessing is spoken)
